Schools take part in campaignby Kathy Deacon Twelve Priority Action Schools Program (PASP) schools in the Campbelltown area launched a month-long period of action designed to highlight the success of the program and to plan further action to secure its continuation on August 31. Teachers, principals and parents from the 12 Campbelltown schools met at Briar Road Public School for the first meeting of a series of similar meetings to be held across the state. Schools were seeking the announcement of the continuation of PASP in 2006 and beyond so that staffing arrangements, timetables and general organisation for the 2006 school year could be finalised. Seventy four public schools from the most socio-economically disadvantaged area of NSW receive $16 million through the Priority Action Schools Program. At the time of the meeting the NSW Government had not allocated this $16 million in its Budget for the 2006 school year, and subsequent years. There have been a number of independent evaluations that have described the program as successful. The program has delivered improved student attendance, improved student learning outcomes in literacy and numeracy and improved student behaviour. Kathy Deacon is a City Organiser.
