Permanency win for TAFE

The conversion from temporary to permanent status for two TAFE teachers is actually a win for many.

A few days before Christmas Linda Leggott and Bernadette Mckay from Western Sydney TAFE received a call from their manager to tell them their temporary position had been converted to permanent status.

Bernadette said the outcome would never have been achieved without the work of Federation. She urged all temporary TAFE teachers to join the union.

This was a win not only for Bernadette and Linda but for other temporary teachers in Western Sydney Institute. The Institute had been equivocating on rolling over temporary teachers and had, until Bernadette and Linda's case was highlighted in Education, been offering only a continuation of temporary status.

Linda said her conversion to permanent status was fantastic. She said she loves working in adult education and it's the best Christmas present anyone could have given her.

Bernadette said she owed her permanent position to the work of the union.

Contact your Federation Organiser for assistance if you are a long term temporary TAFE teacher who wishes to have their position converted to permanent.
