Your rights at work, worth riding for

Bicycle riders will travel about 300 kilometres from Sydney to Canberra over four days to let the Howard Government know what we think about the proposed industrial relations changes.

The riders will leave from Parramatta Park on Saturday November 19 at 8am, arriving at Parliament House, Canberra on November 22 at 1pm, where they will present a petition to the Government.

Ride organiser Narelle Sinclair urgers riders to "help get the message across to the government, to protect our rights at work".

Ms Sinclair said she is a cyclist who likes multi-day cycling and participates in a few in NSW each year.

Recently she organised a ride from Sydney to Melbourne over 11 days which raised $62,000 for cancer charity Canteen.

"I was going to cycle to Canberra anyway and then I thought it would be a good idea to present a petition about how atrocious and unfair these proposed IR reforms are."

So, the community ride was organised.

Already 40 cyclists, plus 10 support people plan to participate.

Ms Sinclair said riders will ride some way down the South Western Freeway, however trying to keep off the main arterial road, and visiting Campbelltown for lunch and staying in Moss Vale overnight. Day 2 will see lunch at Marulan and overnight at Goulburn. Lunch will be had at Cullarin on day 3 with the overnight stay at Yass.

She said there would be no cost to come along, however, participants would be expected to pay for their own accommodation and food.

"We will be escorted by motorcycles who will support us with lollies, fruit and water as well as moral support and minor repairs," she said.

Luggage will be transported to the next overnight stay, but you will need to find your own way home from Canberra.

The petitions have been handed out to Rail, Tram and Bus Union members who have set about getting signatures from the community.

For more information contact Narelle Sinclair on 0438 119 304 or call the RTBU Bus and Tram Division office on (02) 9319 7277 and all messages will be passed on to Narelle.
