Scholarship attraction based on transfer promise
By Owen Hasler Mary Mussen was attracted to mathematics teaching as a mature age student by gaining a scholarship in the Accelerated Teacher Training Program. The program provided me with a scholarship in order to undertake my university training but there was a bond and a requirement for me to teach for three years, Mary said. I said I was prepared to go anywhere in NSW on the understanding that I would gain a transfer at the end of the three years at that location. I certainly wouldnt have accepted otherwise, states Mary. Mary was appointed to Wee Waa High School in 2006 and due to falling enrolments in the school was transferred as a permanent mobile to neighbouring Narrabri High for 2007. You can be quite sure that without the expectation of a transfer being available at the end of my bonded three years I would not have accepted the scholarship conditions and I am still not sure whether I have done the right thing. I will certainly be supporting the Federations demand to retain the transfer system, Mary said. Owen Hasler is a Country Organiser.
