SPC staffing decisions contradictory

The NSW Secondary Principals' Council's decisions about staffing procedures and teacher shortages appear to be contradictory.

The NSW Secondary Principals' Council passed a motion at its State Assembly on May 30:
"That the SPC press the DET to take immediate action to address the critical shortage of mathematics and IT teachers across the state."

But, at the same meeting, the following motion was defeated:
"That SPC seek assurances from DET that the changes to the new staffing procedures will not disadvantage hard to staff schools and schools that have difficulty retaining staff."

The NSW Secondary Principals' Council's Our Bulletin reported initial data from regional and local discussions with principals.

"Things that would make principals happy" included "increased rights to influence 'hire and fire'", from a list of about 25 items.

The bulletin stated the first cut of the information included "some internal contradictions".
