Survival the subject at beginning teachers meeting

by Theo Bougatsas

Surviving your first years as a teacher was the key subject of discussion at a beginning teacher meeting held at Blacktown RSL on March 7, organised by Blacktown Teachers Association.

Participants were welcomed by Blacktown Teachers Association President and Welfare Officer Janet Hannaford and City Organiser Jenny Diamond.

Fiona Conroy gave an account of the issues that affect beginning teachers. Ms Conroy is the New Teacher Development manager for the NSW DET Professional Learning and Leadership Development Directorate. Just as importantly, she gave participants an understanding as to how best implement strategies to overcome the difficulties that are faced by our new and beginning teachers. Issues relating to the Institute of Teachers, status of temporary and casual teachers, and rules and regulations relating to teachers in their probationary year and acquisition of their teaching certificate were all covered in the session.

The day concluded with an opportunity for those attending to address questions to local Organiser Jenny Diamond who responded in detail.

Theo Bougatsas is a relieving Organiser.
