Honk and holler - protect the TAFE skills dollar

The teachers' resolve is summed up in this placard.
The teachers' resolve is summed up in this placard.

By Maxine Sharkey

Approximately 50 full time and part time casual teachers attended a lunch time protest on the steps outside Ultimo TAFE College on June 23.

The protest was organised by Ultimo Branch 3 to send a message to local management, TAFE NSW and the Minister Verity Firth.

"TAFE teachers say NO to 57 extra hours teaching" was chanted loudly, accompanied by a chorus of car horns as traffic in busy Harris Street responded to the simple banner "honk if you support TAFE teachers".

Members of Branch 3 resolved to take further action next semester if the Department maintained the ridiculous proposition of teachers working additional hours to justify a minor alteration to TAFE teachers' overall pay rates.

Additionally, Ultimo Branch 1 has also resolved to take rolling 24-hour stoppages next semester if the Department has not withdrawn their unreasonable demands of increased teaching hours.
