Composition of the Quality Teaching Council

10 elected members:

  • five members are to be elected by and from persons employed to teach (other than as a principal) in a government school and of those five at least two must be rural teachers
  • one member elected by and from persons employed as a principal in a government school that is a primary school
  • one member elected by and from persons employed as a principal in a government school that is a secondary school
  • one member elected by and from persons employed to teach (other than as a principal) in a Catholic systemic school
  • one member elected by and from principals in a Catholic systemic school
  • one member elected by and from those employed to teach (whether or not as a principal) in a non-government school that is not a Catholic systemic school.

Note: After the third anniversary of the first election of elected members of the Council, each person who is an elected member must be a teacher who is accredited.

10 persons appointed by the Minister:

  • the Chairperson -- currently Dr Jim McMorrow
  • a nominee of NSW Teachers Federation
  • a nominee of NSW/ACT Independent Education Union
  • a nominee of the Board of Studies
  • a nominee of the Director-General of Education and Training
  • a nominee of the Association of Independent Schools of NSW
  • a person who, in the opinion of the Minister, represents the parents of school-age children
  • a nominee of the NSW Teacher Education Council
  • two persons who, in the opinion of the Minister, represent the interests of teachers with at least one such person being a member of the Professional Teachers' Council NSW.

Will this composition be maintained?

A person may hold office for terms totalling no more than six years.
