It's time for the Premier to act

The NSW Government needs to stabilise the education portfolio and stop the neglect of public education, Federation stated in a media release on July 29.

More than 2000 public school teachers, including principals, responded to the survey, conducted by post in May where 90 per cent opposed the Department of Education and Training's new school staffing procedures and 67 per cent ranked the lack of funding for maintenance at their school as a "serious" or "very serious" issue.

In addition to the specific questions asked in the survey, respondents were asked to nominate issues for Federation to take up with government.

The three most frequent responses were:

1. More teachers needed (to reduce class sizes, provide more preparation time, more individual help for students and reduce work overload).
2. Professional salaries.
3. Increased funding for resources to help students.
"Federation has written a number of times to the Premier about the funding and policy problems in the education portfolio. It is important for the government to work with teachers on these important issues," the media release stated.
