Voting campaign boosts enrolments

By Kerri Carr

The call to encourage people to enrol to vote has resulted in activities in different parts of the state.

Murray High School teacher John Pratt reports a civics and citizenship forum was attended by Murray and James Fallon high school students late last year at Albury Public School.

Mr Pratt said about 70 students heard Greens Senator Kerry Nettle and Federal Liberal MP Susan Ley give 10 minute addresses about why they should vote. The politicians then answered questions which included questions about the life of politicians, industrial relations and other issues concerning students.

Federation Aboriginal Education Coordinator Charline Emzin-Boyd said a union stall encouraging Aboriginal people to enrol to vote was set up at the Yabun [Survival] Festival at Glebe Park on January 26.

Pamphlets authorised by Unions NSW said: "Your vote will make a difference".

Ms Emzin-Boyd said about 5000 people attended the festival and more than 100 people enrolled to vote at the Electoral Commission stall.

Before the HSC in 2006 Bonnyrigg High School invited the electoral office to speak to year 12 students. Fed Rep Glenn Hokin said students were told about the process of enrolling, and the importance of voting. He said some students filled out the forms on the spot, and others took the forms home. Some students took extra forms home for their parents to fill out.
