Teachers take wildcat action

Teachers at Rooty Hill High School voted to stop work on May 17 at 1pm for the rest of the day in reaction to the Carr Government's unprecedented and provocative attempt to reopen the teachers' salaries case.

During the stopwork action they took their message of condemnation directly to their local state member, Richard Amery, demonstrating outside his electorate office.

Rooty Hill HS Federation Representative John Tognolini said: "My colleagues were shocked and outraged upon hearing the Government's plan to further undermine the profession and the public education system. Bob Carr and his MP colleagues will rue the day they decided to reopen our salaries case and intimidate the Industrial Relations Commission."

In a powerful show of solidarity, teachers from neighbouring schools joined in the protest.

"It is great to see support from other schools at such short notice," Mr Tognolini said.

Spontaneous industrial action was the feature in the St Marys-Mt Druitt area with St Marys Senior High School and Shalvey Public School stopping work.
