Corrective Services salaries progress
16 November 2004

Industrial Relations Commission makes statement for Corrections Senior Educators.
Maree O'Halloran, President of the NSW Teachers Federation, said today:
"Yesterday a Full Bench of the Industrial Relations Commission made an important statement in favour of the case for Senior Corrections Education Officers.
The case currently before the Industrial Relations Commission arises because the NSW Treasury has been refusing to pay 31 Senior Corrections Education Officers the increases paid to other senior educators across New South Wales.
The Commission's statement essentially indicates that the Federation's case has been made and that '. . . a greater percentage adjustment is required for Senior Corrections Education Officers' [than the 12% paid to other educators].
The Federation and the Department have been directed to confer, try to reach agreement and report back to the Commission by 29 November 2004 on the matter of the amount of the increase that should be paid.
Federation has sought to resolve this matter by negotiation prior to and during the Hearing. However, we understand that the NSW Treasury stood in the way of a resolution being reached for the 31 educators.
The amount of Government money spent on the Department of Corrective Services' legal team and the operation of the Industrial Relations Commission for the hearing days must amount to many tens of thousands of dollars. That money has been wasted by the State Government.
We call on the Treasurer to allow the Department of Corrective Services to negotiate and reach agreement about the additional increases to be paid to Senior Corrections Education Officers."
