Maternity Leave

22 November 2004

Improvements sought

By John Dixon
Assistant General Secretary -Communications & Administration

The Federation has written to the Minister of Education and Training , Dr Refshauge seeking further discussions in regard to Maternity leave.

Dear Dr. Refshauge,

Re: Maternity Leave

I refer to the meeting of 12 August, 2004 between yourself and the Senior Officers of the Federation.

At that meeting the Federation claim of 16 weeks paid maternity leave was discussed. The discussion also canvassed that the public sector best practice standard in Australia is now at least 14 weeks paid maternity leave.

The discussion canvassed the fact that in NSW public sector-wide discussions were occurring via the Public Sector Management Office about maternity leave and your view that the Federation's claim would need to be in the context of a whole public sector outcome.

It was decided at the meeting that the Federation and the Department should pursue discussions about the maternity leave determination pending a public sector breakthrough.

The Federation reminds you of this discussion and our claims. We look forward to the negotiations.

Yours sincerely

BARRY JOHNSON
General Secretary

cc: Mr. Andrew Cappie-Wood
