On Tuesday, November 23rd, teachers at Grahamstown Public School stopped work for one hour over noise issues at the school. Over 60 teachers, parents, other staff and community members gathered outside the school.
Grahamstown Public School is under the direct flight path of the RAAF base at Williamtown. For much of the school day students and staff are subject to the noise of F18s taking off and landing. Although the school has triple glazed windows and extra ceiling insulation, these measures are ineffective as there is no airconditioning in the permanent classrooms. During both summer and winter the windows and doors have to remain open for ventilation!
Teachers and parents are determined to continue a campaign of political and industrial action until the necessary airconditioning is supplied.
