World Teachers' Day
05 October 2005
By Educational International
The celebration of teachers and education personnel every year on 5 October was launched in 1994 by Education International and UNESCO. World Teachers' Day provides a unique opportunity to draw public attention to the important role of teachers in the society.
In 2005, organisations and unions affiliated to EI will claim teachers' right to decent working conditions, including the need to be properly trained before and during service. Indeed, teacher training is the focus of this year's World Teachers' Day: "Training for a Stronger Teaching Force!"
As with previous years, teacher organisations celebrate World Teachers' Day in very diverse ways: Many have scheduled meetings with their Ministry of Education; some organise public meetings about teacher training; others undertake cultural or sport events, or award national awards to well-deserving teachers. Another trend in 2005 is for teacher unions in industrialised countries to highlight their development co-operation projects with counterparts in low-income countries, marking the international solidarity among teaching personnel worldwide.
The EI website contains all information on the activities of EI affiliates, downloadable material such as leaflets, posters and stickers as well as statements and press releases on World Teachers' Day: http://www.ei-ie.org/worldteachersday
In Australia, World Teachers' Day is celebrated on the last Friday in October -28th this year- to avoid school holidays. The AEU intends to organise a public event and lobby political leaders on the theme of teacher training.
