Use of e-mails in schools

10 February 2006

Important advice to members in schools

At the end of 2005, the Federation Council lifted the ban on the DET's Webservices email service. This followed lengthy negotiations which resulted in a number of significant improvements which better protect the interests of teachers.

The DET has now agreed to introduce a secure internet browsing and email service from the beginning of 2006 that does not have some of the Webservices functions, such as chat and forum. It was also agreed that teachers cannot be required to activate their email accounts if they do not want to.

The introduction of the service has important implications for all teachers. The following advice is provided to assist members to make informed decisions about its use.
