Corrective Services election commitments

15 March 2007

The Teachers Federation has received a letter from the Minister for Justice, Tony Kelly, concerning State government commitments on education in correctional centres.

The Minister advises that the Department of Corrective Services is to be the lead agency for achieving the State Plan objective of reducing re-offending. He acknowledges that access by inmates to appropriate education, vocational education and libraries will be critical to meeting the State Plan target.

The Minister states that he will be working closely with all stakeholders, including the Teachers Federation, with a view to enhancing the provision of educational and program services to inmates in the Department. This will also mean meeting regularly with the Federation to confer on ways to improve the education of inmates.

The Federation welcomes these commitments.
