OHS videocast19 June 2007The enrolment of students with a history of violenceBob Lipscombe, Federation's Senior Vice President, talks on the procedures that need to be adopted by schools or TAFE Colleges before enrolling students with a history of violence. This is the first in a series of videocasts on Occupational Health and Safety issues in Schools and TAFE Colleges over the coming weeks. Each videocast will provide information and links to important documents to help teachers understand their rights and take the necessary action as members to ensure a safe workplace. The question of the enrolment of students with a history of violence is an important OHS issue and has been the subject of a number of prosecutions the Federation has brought against the Department of Education and Training to protect members rights to a safe workplace for teachers and the students they teach. The Department's own advice states:"Where a student enrolling in a school, TAFE college or DET facility has a history of violence, the principal, college director or senior officer should provide staff who may be affected with all relevant information available to the Department, to enable the school to assess the application for enrolment and to prepare for the arrival of the student......" [Please note: the videocasts are in flash format and stored on Google Video and may not be able to be viewed by members whilst at school due to DET internet filters. You can download it as a file below]
