Convergence on Canberra - 12 February

04 February 2008

Aboriginal control of Aboriginal Affairs

Aboriginal people and their supporters have called for a National Convergence on Canberra for the opening of the new Federal Parliament on Tuesday, 12 February 2008. People are asked to meet at the Aboriginal Tent Embassy at 11.30 am and march to Federal Parliament for a rally at 1 pm.

Barbara Shaw from Mt Nancy Camp near Alice Springs in the Northern Territory writes:

We want to send a strong message to the new government. The Northern Territory intervention is an abuse of power by the previous government. We, as Aboriginal people, need to stand together to be heard as one.

The Aboriginal Rights Coalition hopes that a vibrant, mass Convergence on Canberra on the first day of parliament will be an important step in challenging the legacy of the Howard government's policies on Indigenous issues. Participants in the Convergence can strongly push for an immediate end to what Aboriginal communities have themselves described as an invasion. A strong signal can be sent to Kevin Rudd and the Labor government to put Aboriginal rights at the centre of their agenda; to massively increase the resources available to communities across Australia and to respect Aboriginal control of Aboriginal affairs.
