Students@Work website launch 01 May 2008By Diane Hague Media and Communications Officer
The NSW Teachers Federation is today launching a website that contains everything students, parents, teachers and employers would want to know about the world of work for today's teenagers. Students @ Work is a new public information service provided by public school and TAFE teachers to help students balance the competing demands of full time study and part time work. Since 1983 the number of students who work part time has increased from 28% to 79% of all 15 - 19 year olds who were also studying full time according to the Australian Bureau of Statistics (2004). This is important at a time when unemployment in Australia (below 5% in 2007) has led to a tightening of the labour market. Maree O'Halloran, Federation President, said: "Teachers in public schools and TAFE colleges recognise that students gain valuable skills in the workplace. However, it is important that young people are safe, know their rights and are able to balance school and work life well. This new web service should be of great benefit to our students, their parents and their employers." John Robertson, Secretary Unions NSW, said: "The reality is that young workers are extremely vulnerable, so getting the right information about things like conditions, awards and occupational health and safety is really important. This website connects young workers with the information they need in the workplace and knowing your rights at work is the first step to being able to exercise them." The idea for the website was born out of research the Federation conducted last year among 15 - 19 year olds, which showed that students who worked long hours and late shifts were most likely to come to school feeling tired; failed to complete homework assignments and believed part time work negatively impacted on their school performance. The research also showed that students were looking for a trusted source of information about the workplace. There are many interactive tools for use, particularly by students. A CV Maker is provided that will take students through a step-by-step process to producing a professional image. A web-based calendaring tool called the "Time Tamer" can be used by students to plan their time. Students who need extra help in planning their work/study load can invite parents and teachers to view their calendars when helping out.
