Statewide strike on Thursday 22 May 11 May 2008By Diane Hague Media and Communications Officer
On Saturday 10 May, the Teachers Federation State Council, comprising 300 teachers from across NSW, confirmed that the statewide strike on 22 May, called for at stop work meetings in April, will go ahead. The Department of Education and Training has deliberately delayed commencement of negotiations on a new staffing agreement in schools; proposed destructive staffing changes its representatives knew would be unacceptable to teachers; spurned attempts at good faith negotiation and has made a farce of established industrial relations practice by offering its imposed conditions as the basis for an agreement with the Teachers Federation. In TAFE, the government pursues an agenda of downgrading teacher education qualifications; increasing TAFE student fees and proposing a disastrous restructure targeting access and equity areas in particular, under the mantra of doing business in the 21st century. While the disruption to students' learning through industrial action is regrettable, Federation members will continue a significant and sustained campaign of political and industrial action to achieve an industrial agreement on school staffing that ensures teachers' rights to transfer and students' rights to quality public education.
