24 Hour 'Staffing and Standards' Strike

13 May 2008

All members from schools, TAFE and AMES are directed to strike for 24 hours on Thursday 22 May 2008. On the day of the strike, members are requested to attend rallies or other local Federation organised strike day
activities and to generate publicity around the issues in dispute.

Please contact your Organiser or an Executive member of your local Association for details of strike day activities in your area.

For the information of Sydney metropolitan members, a rally will be held in Farrer Place, Sydney from 11 a.m.
(Please see attached map). Farrer Place is on Bent Street, Sydney and is directly adjacent to the offices of the
Director-General and the Minister for Education and Training in Governor Macquarie Tower. All members who are
able to attend the Farrer Place Rally are strongly urged to do so. We must publicly demonstrate strong membership
support by maximising attendance at the rally.

A one page summary of the consequences of the government's staffing changes is attached to assist members in
explaining the dispute to parents. This details the four major concerns and consequences of the government's
attacks on public schools and teachers' working conditions.

In TAFE, it is critical that TAFE teachers continue to maintain teacher qualifications to ensure that their professional status, and the value of their work is not threatened.

The employer's proposed restructuring of TAFE will lead to significant job losses, cuts to programs in Access and Equity; diminished support for students and changes to the role and status of OTEN. The proposals carry an expectation that teachers in Institutes will take on additional workload.

In AMES, there has been no breakthrough in discussions with the employer on its proposals to reduce teacher permanency.
