Annual Conference guest speakers 05 July 2008By Diane Hague Media and Communications Officer There are three guest speakers at Annual Conference who will be addressing significant current issues. On Sunday 6 July at 2.10 pm, Professor Larissa Behrendt will speak on Aboriginal rights in the current political context. Professor Larissa Behrendt will address the Conference on Aboriginal rights, particularly an Australian Bill Of Rights which includes Indigenous people's rights. Professor Behrendt is a Professor of Law and Director of Research at the Jumbunna Indigenous House of Learning at the University of Technology and a proud member of the Eualeyai and Kamilaroi Nations of north western NSW. A graduate of Harvard University, Professor Behrendt is a Judicial Member of the Administrative Decisions Tribunal, Equal Opportunity Division and the Alternate Chair of the Serious Offenders Review Board. Professor Behrendt has published on property law, Indigenous rights, dispute resolution and Aboriginal women's issues. Her book, Achieving Social Justice: Indigenous Rights and Australia's Future was published by The Federation Press in 2003. On Monday 7 July at 10.15 am, Eric Lee, LabourStart founder, will address the Conference on Online activism: the next ten years. Eric Lee has changed the way unions think about campaigning and using the Internet. He is the founder of LabourStart, where trade unionists start their day on the net. LabourStart is an international campaigning website reporting on workers' struggles and victories from all countries in the world. One of its successful Australian campaigns concerned ensuring Hilton Hotel workers in Sydney retained employment and entitlements when Hilton was being renovated in early 2000. Mr Lee has travelled and written extensively, and has designed dozens of trade union websites in Britain and elsewhere. He will be sharing his latest ideas for the way forward for online activism. On Tuesday 8 July at 9.10 am Professor Robert Walker and Ms Betty Con Walker will address the Conference on the vexed issue of maintenance in public schools and electricity privatisation. Professor Walker is a Professor of Accounting at the University of Sydney. His specialist interests include public sector finances, corporate regulation, and corporate governance. Ms Con Walker is an economist with experience in both the private and public sectors. They are co-authors of Privatisation: Sell off or Sell Out? which argued against privatisation and debt reduction.
