Salaries and staffing details

22 January 2009
By

NSW Teachers Federation

Negotiations over the last two months have achieved significant pay increases for teachers and the retention of an effective transfer system for staffing schools.

Members will meet on the morning of 6 February to vote on the final endorsement of the settlement.

The Federation sought negotiations on salaries in April 2008 but they did not commence until September. It is most unfortunate that serious negotiations did not commence until teachers voted for industrial action.

Federation explanation of salaries settlement for schools

The parties negotiated a new three year Staffing Agreement which recognises the importance of transfers for teachers and ensures that schools in all areas of NSW will be properly staffed with qualified teachers. This agreement will lead to an increase in opportunities for teachers to transfer.

The salary increases and Staffing Agreement will help attract and retain teachers as 16,000 teachers reach retirement age over the next three years.

Negotiations on TAFE teachers' working conditions have been particularly difficult and while they will receive pay increases from 1 January 2009, a joint working party will continue to look at the issues in TAFE and how it can address its role in light of the Rudd Government's agenda for post school education.

Federation explanation of salaries settlement for TAFE

The Teachers Federation made some concessions but in return has, in addition to real salary increases in a difficult economic environment, gained some significant improvements in teachers' working conditions, particularly in the area of sick leave and return to work for injured teachers.

Salary increases

School teachers, permanent and temporary TAFE teachers will receive pay increases of
  • 4.4% from January 2009
  • 3.8% from January 2010
  • 3.8% from January 2011
