Pay freeze rejected
02 June 2009

The State Government was "set to win an unprecedented agreement with the unions to delay hundreds of thousands of public sector wage rises already negotiated in existing awards..", unions with members in the NSW public sector, including the Teachers Federation, have rejected any suggestion of a wage freeze.
Despite a claim published on the front page of the Sydney Morning Herald yesterday that the State Government was "set to win an unprecedented agreement with the unions to delay hundreds of thousands of public sector wage rises already negotiated in existing awards..", unions with members in the NSW public sector, including the Teachers Federation, have rejected any suggestion of a wage freeze.
Although this had already been made clear to the NSW Government, opposition to a wage freeze was reaffirmed at a meeting of unions covering the public sector held last night. The meeting also confirmed that the unions expect scheduled payrises under the present wage agreements to be delivered when they fall due.
The reported approach of the State Government is in stark contrast with that of the Federal Government, with its attempts to stimulate the economy by boosting the incomes of Australians, not cutting them.
