League Tables remain banned

09 September 2009
By

Sally Edsall

After several days of debate in the NSW Parliament, the Rees Labor government was defeated in its attempt to overturn the legislation banning the publication of league tables in NSW schools.

Tonight, the repeal attempt was rebuffed in the Upper House. The Greens Education Spokesperson, John Kaye, who was responsible for introducing the legislation banning publication, said 'This is a massive victory for students, parents and teachers across this state.'

This means that publishing comparisons of schools on the basis of test results remains illegal in NSW.

The failure of the government to repeal the ban follows the highly successful rally at Rosehill and an intensive lobbying campaign by an unprecedented coalition of the education community, principals, teachers and administrators across the public and private sectors, parents and professional associations.

The attempt to lift the ban was defeated by the Greens, the Coalition and Independent Gordon Moyes. The two Shooters Party members abstained, and so the government only had Christian Democrat Fred Nile vote in support.
