Demonstration at Ultimo TAFE tomorrow

10 October 2007

Joe Hockey at Workplace Authority launch

The Federal Minister for Workplace Relations, Joe Hockey, will be launching an online product for the Workplace Authority at the Muse, Ultimo TAFE Campus, Harris Street, Ultimo on Thursday 11 October between 10am and noon.

Teachers Federation members will be demonstrating at the Muse to draw attention to the impact which WorkChoices has had on TAFE students; the failure of the Federal government to properly fund TAFE and its proposals to force workplace changes in TAFE if re-elected.

The Federation's own research released earlier this week on the impact of WorkChoices on TAFE students shows young people have been vulnerable in the workplace for some time. They are propping up the 24 hour, 7 day per week service economy. As vulnerable workers, they have been adversely affected by WorkChoices.

As well, it has been made clear that the Federal government if re-elected, would tie future funding of TAFE to the imposition of a WorkChoices style agenda, including Australian Workplace Agreements; more autonomy for Institutes and the threat of directing funding to private providers to force change.
