Seaforth TAFE

02 May 2008
By

Diane Hague

Media and Communications Officer

The Teachers Federation continues to campaign for the retention of the Seaforth TAFE site as a public education facility.

Since the closure of Seaforth TAFE almost 10 years ago, the student population covering the Northern Beaches area has continued to grow. The annual report of the Northern Sydney Institute of TAFE identifies continued and sustained growth.

Due to this growth and lack of accommodation at the Northern Beaches campus, students are being asked to enrol at other colleges to gain the skills and education they require. Because of the Institute's inability to accommodate classes on the Northern Beaches, students are being forced to travel to other colleges including North Sydney, Ryde, Meadowbank and even to Hornsby.

Following the closure of Seaforth TAFE, Manly Council has looked at a number of options for the site, including retention of the site for a TAFE college. Despite a number of proposals put forward by Land Com for the redevelopment of the site, support for a TAFE college in the area has continued. A recommendation endorsed by the Manly Council was for a plebiscite on 3 May 2008, allowing the community to vote and have their preferred option clearly identified.

In support of retaining Seaforth TAFE, teachers in the Manly area will vote 'YES' to Question 1 in the plebiscite being conducted by Manly Council on 3 May on the future of the Seaforth TAFE site.
