Mt Druitt TAFE stopwork 15 May 2008By Amber Flohm Multicultural/TAFE Organiser
Mt Druitt TAFE teachers stopped work on Tuesday May 13 in protest at the proposed downgrading of their qualifications. Teachers assembled outside the campus main gate and chanted with enthusiasm "Della Bosca get real, Cert IV no deal". Mt Druitt teachers stopped work in support of other colleagues in Western Sydney and around the state, who have also taken action this week around this fundamental issue. The NSW Government has moved to cut the requirement that permanent TAFE teachers must have university level teacher education qualifications. TAFE teachers believe all teachers should have the opportunity to gain the best teaching skills possible. Teaching in TAFE is a complex job, with constant changes and requirements to meet industry standards and community requirements. Pamphlets titled 'Why are TAFE teachers and educational staff protesting?' were distributed to members of the public, who showed great concern around the latest attacks on TAFE. Members of the public tooted their horns loudly, as did one train driver, to indicate solidarity around this vital issue. Towards the end of the protest, members of the public wanted to join in the chants to show their support for the cause.
