Nirimba TAFE teachers stop work 15 May 2008By Amber Flohm Multicultural/TAFE Organiser
TAFE teachers at Nirimba College of Western Sydney Institute took stopwork action on Wednesday 14 May and held a protest rally at the front gates of Nirimba's Education Precinct. Teachers wanted to ensure that their employers and the community were informed about their anger at the proposed downgrading of new TAFE teachers' education qualifications. Nirimba members stand in solidarity with other teachers across Western Sydney and around the state. Teachers and students at Nirimba were addressed by TAFETA President, Rob Long, who outlined the negative impact that these changes, as well as the increase in TAFE fees and the proposed restructure of TAFE in the name of doing business in the 21st century, will have on colleges, students and public education. Ross Stagg, Federation Representative at Nirimba, said: "The downgrading of TAFE teachers' qualifications is an insult to our profession and the important work that TAFE teachers do. Western Sydney teachers are angry that support previously provided for new TAFE teachers will be withdrawn."
