Newcastle Aboriginal members supported

Newcastle teachers meeting

Newcastle TAFE teachers today unanimously supported a resolution opposing members taking on the work and duties of Aboriginal members who have lost their jobs.

For the second week in a row, Newcastle TAFE teachers have met in support of their Aboriginal colleagues. A recommendation at today's meeting strongly opposed the actions of the Hunter Institute in cutting the working conditions of Aboriginal Special Programs Coordinators. The Coordinators will lose their existing position and may be forced to accept a position which is $10,000 less in salary and lose seven weeks leave per year.

Aboriginal groups throughout the Hunter were not consulted on the loss of educational positions in the Purrimaibahn Aboriginal Education Unit or the loss of three Special Programs Coordinators who have supported the Aboriginal communities throughout the Hunter for more than a decade. It is little wonder that the Hunter Institute is now attempting to sign a Memorandum of Understanding with the many Aboriginal groups throughout the Hunter.

The recommendation from today's meeting is for all branches across the Hunter to meet on 27 May to determine further action.
