NO to three extra weeks teaching time

TAFE Teachers say NO to three extra weeks teaching time

Teachers from Wetherill Park, Blacktown and Mt Druitt TAFE Colleges gathered on Wednesday, 20 May 2009, to protest at the Toongabbie Office of the Premier Nathan Rees. Federation members delivered letters outlining their concern at the failure of the NSW Government to finalise the TAFE Award .

TAFE Teachers are disappointed that the Minister for Education and Training, Verity Firth, has rejected proposals made by the Teachers Federation for a fair and reasonable settlement of the TAFE Award. These included changes around accumulating programs, professional development time, class sizes and a range of other measures. These would have provided the necessary savings to fund agreed salary increases beyond 2.5% per annum.

TAFE Teachers at the protest made it clear to the Premier that they say NO to proposals which would require teachers to work the equivalent of three additional teaching weeks per year.

Changes proposed by the Department will result in a significant loss of jobs, and massively increase the workload of an overstretched and understaffed TAFE workforce.

The NSW Government needs to invest in TAFE to ensure that the training needs of the community will be met and to provide opportunities for young people.

Members called on the Permier Nathan Rees to intervene in the matter and work with the Federation to finalise the Award.
