Save Working Conditions

TAFE teachers worth every cent

TAFE Members Urged to Act to Save Working Conditions

The Federation was successful in achieving a salary settlement which limits the extent of working conditions changes. These now should be no more than needed to fund the above 2.5% salary increases in the 2009-11 Award. After lengthy negotiations the Federation proposed a fair and reasonable cost savings and initiatives package. However, the Department and the Minister have refused to accept this proposal and are now seeking harsh teaching workload increases in the Industrial Relations Commission.

In addition to previously agreed concessions, the Department's last proposal sought to:

  • Increase the teaching load of all permanent and temporary teachers by 57 hours per year.
This also applies to head teachers, special program coordinators and adult literacy officers.
This is equivalent to 3 weeks of additional teaching work per year without extra compensation!
  • Remove current limits on weekly teaching hours.
  • Abolition of professional development time for related employee classifications.

These changes would result in thousands of jobs being lost, especially those of part time casuals!

TAFE members will need to fight to save their working conditions!

You are therefore urged to SAY NO! to 3 extra weeks' teaching:

  1. Hold a Branch meeting in conjunction with your TAFE Organiser, carry a resolution supporting the Federation position and forward this to the Premier, the Minister and your local NSW MP/s, with a copy faxed to Federation on (02) 9217 2488.
  2. Also advise Federation by fax if your branch is prepared to take other appropriate action.
  3. Use our website quick protest email facility on http://www.nswtf.org.au/campaigns/tafe/
  4. Phone and/or meet with your local State MP/s.
  5. Talk to your students, community, local businesses and industry to gain their support.

More information will be provided as the campaign unfolds.
