Special Education: meetings to discuss reallocation of support
The Premier of NSW, Barry O'Farrell has stated that the government intends to make changes to the way support for students with special needs is allocated. The proposed new model, based on the "Illawarra Trial", changes the way over 1800 support teacher positions are allocated and utilised in schools. It also changes the way funding is allocated for students with autism and mental health disorders.
There will be public information exchanges on the implications of the trial for parents, teachers' aides, teachers and therapists. The meeting is hosted by parents. Representatives of the NSW Teachers’ Federation, Independent Member of Parliament, Clover Moore, Shadow Education Minister Carmel Tebbutt and The Greens' Education Spokesperson, John Kaye, have offered to attend.
Brendan O’Connor, Peter Garrett, Adrian Piccoli and the Australian Education Union have also been invited.
The meetings will take place on Thursday 16 February at 1pm and 7pm.
Venue: Parliament Theatrette, State Parliament, Macquarie Street, Sydney
