2012 Women’s Conference - A Focus on Job Security

The NSWTF Women’s Conference this year is being held on Saturday March 31st at the NSWTF Auditorium, 37 Reservoir Street, Surry Hills.

Theme:

The conference theme for 2012 is “A Woman’s Place is in Her Union” with an overarching focus on job security for women teachers now and into the future.

Guest Speakers:

University of Sydney Business School Senior Lecturer and Research Fellow, Dr Rae (Rachel) Cooper will be the keynote speaker at this year’s conference. Dr Cooper has been internationally recognised for her research in the areas of collective bargaining, women and work and industrial relations. She has been published extensively contributing to a variety of books, conference and seminar papers and journal articles along with articles in leading newspapers.

In 2007, along with fellow members of the Women and Work Research Group, Dr Cooper undertook a study of the implications of national regulatory change on low paid women. She is also the co-chair of the Union Strategy research group. This group brings together Australian and international researchers of collective organisation and bargaining. Dr Cooper’s research has bought to the forefront the implications for women in the current industrial relations climate and the neo-liberalist attack on unions and collective bargaining. Recently Dr Cooper was involved in the recently released ACTU report “Women in Australian Unions”.

Emma Maiden is Unions New South Wales Deputy Assistant Secretary and Women’s Co-ordinator. She is also the co-ordinator of Unions New South Wales Secure Jobs - Better Future Campaign. The work being done by Emma on this campaign coincides with the issues of uncertainty about job security that will become paramount for all teachers, including permanent teachers, as the current governments agenda of the devolution of Public Education in NSW becomes more transparent and apparent. Emma will deliver a broad perspective of the ways in which the current economic climate is undermining job security and the subsequent implications for women across the community.

Workshops:

Along with these inspiring women speakers there will be the opportunity to partake in two workshops. These will consist of a variety of professional and industrial information sessions.

Childcare:

Childcare will be available throughout the day in the Federation Childcare Centre for children up to 14 years of age.
