Culture call for children
By IC- Wales
Schoolchildren should be taken on more trips to theatres and galleries. That is the call from Wales' largest teaching union.
The National Union of Teachers has set its sights on helping to raise a generation of theatregoers.
A new report called Breaking Down the Barriers, which the union published this week, calls for pupils to be given a guaranteed number of outdoor activities as well as visits to museums, galleries and theatre shows like Les Miserables.
The document has been published in anticipation of a spring or summer general election. It sets out the need for an overhaul of the post-14 curriculum so that the individual needs of each child and young person are top of the agenda. Gethin Lewis, secretary of NUT Cymru, said: "Visits to museums, galleries and theatres can enrich the education of children and young people.
