Zimbabwe teachers strike in pay row
By AFP
Teachers at state schools across inflation-ravaged Zimbabwe began an indefinite strike on Wednesday to press for better salaries, a union spokesman said.
Zimbabwe Teachers' Association (ZIMTA) chief executive Peter Mabande said that teachers wanted monthly pay rises index-linked to the rate of inflation, which is currently running at more than 6,500 percent, as most were earning less than the official poverty threshold.
"Teachers are on strike demanding remuneration that is adequate to keep them going for the month as determined by the current poverty datum line," Mabande told AFP.
"We had been negotiating up to Monday for better salaries for teachers, some of whom can no longer afford to pay schools for their own children.
