Professional and industrial strength

By joining one of the largest trade unions in NSW you will strengthen our collective capacity to advocate for the concerns and aspirations of public school teachers to achieve improved salaries, working conditions and professional development.

Professional protection and legal assistance

Federation provides information and advice to its financial members on teachers’ working conditions and entitlements. This includes assistance to protect employment rights of members in legal matters.

Workplace representation

Your workplace has an elected Federation Representative and Women’s Contact who can provide advice and assistance. You can also contact a Federation Organiser on (02) 9217 2100 or 1300 654 369 for support.

Voting rights and shaping policy

Members are able to vote on Federation policy and direction through a variety of democratic processes, including voting at association meetings, and representation at decision making forums such as Council and Annual Conference.

Professional and industrial support

Federation members can access confidential advice about their rights and entitlements from experienced Officers and staff in the Professional Support team.

Access to up-to-date information

Federation’s website contains useful information, including links to the latest Federation news and campaign material. Members receive a password to access more information concerning their working conditions and campaigns.

Through Education, a free online and print journal for members, you can stay informed of developments in education, union activities and available member services.

Trade Union Training courses

Access to paid release is available to allow members to attend a variety of courses to develop their skills and union knowledge.

Centre for Professional Learning (CPL)

The CPL is the union-supported professional learning centre and provides Federation members with high-quality courses, conferences and teaching support. The CPL also produce podcasts that consist of professional conversations around practical and important aspects of teaching and Public Education.

Journal of Professional Learning (JPL)

All members receive JPL to support their teaching and professional practice.


Federation’s library provides members with a comprehensive and up-to-date information service to support the professional development needs of members.

Teachers Health

Federation members can join this top fund at competitive contribution rates. Services include competitive travel insurance.

Teachers Health Centres also provide eye and dental services with substantial discounts for Federation members.

Teachers Mutual Bank

Teachers Mutual Bank offers a wide range of products and services with competitive interest rates.

Anna Stewart Program

Federation’s Anna Stewart Program was established as an annual on-the-job training program for women unionists, to opportunities to increase involvement of women members in the union.

Eric Pearson Study Grant

This study grant is awarded annually to a member to undertake research in Australia or overseas on an issue of practical significance to Federation members.

Future Teacher Scholarships

Each year the Federation provides 15 Future Teacher Scholarships valued at $4000 each to students studying education.

National voice for education

Federation is the NSW Branch of the Australian Education Union, the second largest union in the country, influencing public education, schools and TAFE policy and funding nationally.
