Each year, approximately 4,000 markers are employed by the Board of Studies, Teaching & Educational Standards (BOSTES) to mark Higher School Certificate written, practical, performance and language oral examinations.
Federation members are represented by the NSW Teachers Federation for industrial purposes.
Selection of markers
Applications for appointment as a HSC Marker are made to BOSTES during Term 1 each year.
Selection of markers by BOSTES must be based on the criteria in clause 10 of the HSC Markers Award 2014-2016 (below).
Federation members are permitted the necessary time at the beginning of marking to elect a Federation Representative (Fed Rep).
Fed Reps are advised to register themselves with the Federation as an official representative of employees for industrial purposes and for contact by a Federation Officer if required, using the HSC Markers Fed Rep Registration Form below.
In addition, useful information and references for Fed Reps are provided in the HSC Markers Fed Rep Kit below.
External markers and their Fed Reps are encouraged to exchange contact details during corporate briefing sessions to enable ongoing contact in external marking mode if required.
Payments to Markers
Rates of pay for markers were increased by 0.5% above the public sector wages cap for each year in 2014-2016 as a result of meetings of markers held in May 2014.
Markers with queries about their pay are advised to contact the Finance branch of BOSTES at first instance on (02) 9367 8197.
