Teachers Federation President, Bob Lipscombe said today:
“The O’Farrell Government has failed to respond to calls from the Teachers Federation, Unions NSW and unions representing fire fighters, nurses, police and other public sector workers to reverse the changes to NSW industrial relations legislation.
“Given this failure, the Teachers Federation directs all members to stop work for 24 hours on Thursday, 8 September.
“During this stop work all members who are within a reasonable travelling distance of Sydney are urged to attend the public sector rally in the Sydney Domain, with all other members urged to attend protest activities organised within their local areas.”
For teachers, the legislative changes passed by the O’Farrell Government mean:
• employer-funded salary increases are limited to 2.5% per annum for at least 4 years, which means a pay cut after four years of about $75 a week for an experienced teacher. This will make it so much harder to recruit and retain new teachers at a time when many thousands of experienced teachers are retiring and must be replaced.
• any further salary increases must be funded by increasing teacher workloads and worsening the quality of education for students (e.g. by increasing class sizes, reducing release time, reducing or eliminating the employment of casual school teachers and part-time TAFE teachers to replace absent colleagues).
• the denial of the right for public education teachers to have their salaries and working conditions case heard before an independent commission. This is a right available to every other non-public sector employee in NSW, including teachers in private schools.
