NAPLAN results out this week further demonstrate the damage students suffer due to inequity in schooling resources – inequity the federal government refuses to fix – Federation President and AEU Deputy Federal President Maurie Mulheron said.
Two international tests this month also showed persistent gaps in equity in Australia.
“Despite this, the federal government is pushing ahead with its plan to scrap needs-based Gonski funding after 2017, denying schools $3.8 million in extra resources,” the Federation President said.
“The evidence shows a nation cannot have high achievement and low equity,” Mr Mulheron said.
Education ministers meet on Friday to discuss funding arrangements post-2017 with no word still from federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham on his education funding plans, he said.
“There has been no consultation with states, no input from experts and no detail around Minister Birmingham’s plan,” Mr Mulheron said, warning that Canberra should not pit states against each other in a fight for dollars.
