Equity themed seminars

The Federation conducts two hour seminars on equity matters at various venues around New South Wales. These seminars are usually conducted in conjunction with local teacher associations, often at their request.

The NSW Teachers Federation is endorsed to provide NESA Registered Professional Development for teachers accredited at Proficient Teacher.

Special Education

Organising for intervention - accessing teaching supports for students with disability

The seminar will provide participants with information on what Departmental procedures, funding and human resources are available to teachers in the learning support of students with disability (SWD) in public schools. Opportunities will be provided to identify local supports and develop strategies to organise with colleagues when resources are not readily accessible.

Completing a Organising for intervention - accessing teaching supports for students with disability seminar with NESA will contribute 2 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 1.6.2, 7.2.2 and 7.3.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

LGBTIQ Diversity

Supporting LGBTIQ students in schools

Many school teachers may feel ill equipped to meet the needs of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex or queer (LGBTIQ) students and seek guidance on how to tackle homophobia, and create a safe and inclusive educational environment.

This two hour seminar covers topics including the motivations creating safe and inclusive schools, how to support LGBTIQ students and families, and will provide the opportunity for participants to transfer knowledge gained in to their own educational setting.

The seminar also aims to improve teachers’ understanding and knowledge of relevant legislative requirements and system/school processes that can support LGBTIQ students in order to ensure their wellbeing and safety in school environments.

Completing a Supporting LGBTIQ students in schools seminar with NESA will contribute 2 hours of NESA Registered PD addressing 4.4.2, 6.2.2 and 7.2.2 from the Australian Professional Standards for Teachers towards maintaining Proficient Teacher Accreditation in NSW.

Women

Women's Workplace Rights: What you need to know and how the Federation helps

Participants will learn about workplace rights and entitlements for women in the workplace and develop strategies to respond to and organise around these issues. The workshop will also cover the different components of the Federation’s Women’s Program and how union roles and activities can be used to support gender equality in workplaces and associations.
