The Gonski Review was the most comprehensive investigation of the way our schools are funded in almost 40 years.
Headed by respected businessman David Gonski, it found that too many children were being denied the education they needed due to a lack of resources.
What did the Gonski Review recommend?
The Gonski review recommended that schools be funded according to the needs of their students and what was required to educate each one of them to a high standard.
Each school would get a base level of Commonwealth and state funding, plus additional money or loadings to take into account the school’s size and location and the individual needs of students (such as whether they are from a disadvantaged background or have a disability).

2017 Gonski Funding - NSW public schools by federal electorate
Mr Birmingham: time to listen to teachers and state ministers on Gonski benefits
Federal Education Minister Simon Birmingham needs to listen to the state and territory education ministers at today's Education Council meeting, when they tell him he must keep Gonski funding because it is making a difference in schools.
Federation President Maurie Mulheron, Australian Education Union (AEU) Federal President Correna Haythorpe and several state ministers, including NSW's Rob Stokes, spoke to the media about pushing for full funding of the Gonski schools funding model in Hobart this morning, outside the venue of the ministers’ Education Council meeting.
Eleven months ago the Turnbull Government announced it wanted to cut the Gonski needs-based funding program short by two years. Details on an alternative funding plan have not been forthcoming.
Premier urged to demand that Federal Government fully funds Gonski agreement
The NSW Public Education Alliance has appealed to the NSW Premier to reject alternatives to the Gonski schools funding model.
The Alliance comprises the organisations representing the parents, citizens, principals and teachers of NSW public schools.
In a letter sent to the Premier yesterday, the Alliance asks Ms Berejiklian to act on her supportive public statements about securing the Gonski needs-based funding model, and demand that the Federal Government honour its obligations under the NSW Gonski agreement.
"We urge that this position be put by you and NSW Education Minister Rob Stokes at any events prior to and after the 9 May Federal Budget, including meetings of the Education Council and the Council of Australian Governments," the letter states.
Signatories assured Ms Berejiklian that such action would be "widely respected and greatly valued”.
A copy of the letter has been emailed to NSW Education Minister Rob Stokes, who will be attending the Education Council meeting in Hobart tomorrow. Federation President Maurie Mulheron will attend Australian Education Union campaign events associated with this meeting.
NSW Parliament Stands up for Gonski
The campaign for the fair, equitable schools funding offered by the Gonski model has enjoyed strong support in NSW – and support that crosses party lines. In recent weeks, members of NSW parliament have renewed their support for Gonski funding, and the great work the funding is facilitating in NSW schools to lift student outcomes.
On March 28, member for Shellharbour, Anna Watson, strongly endorsed “the outstanding reforms of the Gonski funding agreement”.
She said evidence clearly showed how Gonski funding was “levelling the playing field in schools right across Australia and is ensuring that the most disadvantaged students have the same opportunities as their peers”.
