While Term 3 has often been considered the “quiet” term, with an absence of reports and school-based performances, this year's Term 3 seemed full of action with the marriage postal survey, associated campaigning as well as all of the other school activities crammed into the term.
Federation hopes that everyone has taken the time and action to take care of themselves, and used the holidays to rest, recuperate and recharge. If you need to reach out and access support, there are many services available including the Employee Assistance Program, the Gay and Lesbian Counselling Service of NSW, BeyondBlue and Lifeline. ACON have also created the poster below to remind people how to practise self-care during the marriage postal survey (and beyond).

Federation has been involved in a number of activities calling for marriage equality, which was most recently reaffirmed by a decision of 2011 Annual Conference
Federation commends the Department of Education for acknowledging the risk to student wellbeing posed by the Australian Marriage Law Postal Survey
A large number of responses have been received to Federation’s survey of LGBTIQ members in conjunction with researchers at the University of Western Sydney
In other countries such as the UK and the US, there are well-established “history month” initiatives that educate people about LGBTIQ history and encourage teachers to incorporate LGBTIQ history and perspectives into teaching and learning
One area that can often benefit from further development is further integration of LGBTIQ perspectives into school policies, procedures and practises

LGBTIQ Special Interest Group
The LGBTIQ Special Interest Group is open to any interested member of Federation. It is concerned with lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, intersex and queer (LGBTIQ) issues and how these issues affect teachers and schools.
Meetings take place in Sydney, with the next one scheduled for 12.30pm Saturday, 25 November, at Federation House, 23-33 Mary Street, Surry Hills. The meeting provides members with the opportunity to discuss relevant LGBTIQ issues, inform Federation of specific areas of concern and provide advice to Federation on policies relating to LGBTIQ issues. Teleconference facilities will be available for those who are not able to be at the meeting in person. To RSVP and gain the details for teleconferencing, please email firstname.lastname@example.org.
