Last term had lots happening within the LGBTIQ community with Pride month, 50th celebrations of Stonewall and public discussion about “religious freedoms” in the Australian community. The newsletter contains Federation articles on these topics that you may have missed, or not had the time to read due to reports and other work demands.
Last term also saw Association LGBTIQ Contacts attend Trade Union Training to learn about their role and to assist in developing a guide for Association LGBTIQ Contacts, which we hope to release later this term. The SIG also met informally for lunch at Annual Conference so that we can actually get to meet and network with each other. It was great to see some new faces and meet some new people – so thanks to everyone who attended.
This term will continue to be challenging with conversations continuing around “religious freedom” and LGBTIQ discrimination, and I urge you to read Maurie Mulheron’s article “A statement in support of our LGBTIQA+ students and colleagues” if you haven’t already done so. I also encourage you to practice self-care over the coming months in relation to this topic, and access support if/when you need it. ACON has put together support resources that they hope will help everyone within our communities who may find themselves most vulnerable to hate speech in the harmful debate surrounding “religious freedoms” and you may find this kit helpful.
This term will also see Federation attend the Newcastle Pride Fair Day on August 24 – so if you are in or near the area, it would be great to see you there, or better yet have you volunteer to help out on our stall! An email will be sent to those in the area closer to the date, but if you also have local LGBTIQ events that you would like to see Federation participate in – raise these events at your local Federation Association meeting and get support for a stall/parade entry/whatever presence you would like. Federation centrally can provide some support in terms of LGBTIQ resources and your Organiser can assist with coordinating this.

Wear it Purple Day: empowering together
Wear it Purple Day will be held on Friday 30 August with the theme – Stand Up. Stand Out – encouraging LGBTIQA+ students and supporters to stand up for themselves and what they believe in.

We are a union that champions equality because, as teachers, we want our children to grow up in a world that accepts all and celebrates diversity. After all, it is what we should practise, model and teach every day in our public schools.
A matter of pride
June was Pride Month, an international celebration of the LGBTIQA+ community. Originally beginning in remembrance of the 1969 Stonewall riots in New York – a tipping point in the gay liberation movement in the US – Pride Month is a symbol of LGBTIQA+ unity and an acknowledgement of its history.
IDAHOBIT Day provides an opportunity to promote justice and protection for all
International Day Against Homophobia, Biphobia and Transphobia (IDAHOBIT Day) is an internationally recognised day of significance that aims to draw attention to the violence and discrimination experienced by LGBTIQ people.
Dates to remember
While Mardi Gras has come and gone, there are a number of important dates of significance throughout the year for the LGBTIQ community. For those starting to integrate LGBTIQ dates into the workplace/school calendar, IDAHOT and Wear It Purple are significant days that can be celebrated and/or acknowledged in schools.

LGBTIQ Special Interest Group
The LGBTIQ Special Interest Group (SIG) is open to any member of the NSW Teachers Federation. It is concerned with LGBTIQ issues and how they affect teachers and schools.
Meetings take place in Sydney, with the next one scheduled for 12.30pm on Saturday 10 August at Federation House, 23-33 Mary Street, Surry Hills. The meeting provides members with the opportunity to discuss relevant LGBTIQ issues, inform Federation of specific areas of concern and provide advice to Federation concerning policies relating to LGBTIQ issues.
Teleconference facilities will be available for those who are not able to be at the meeting in person. To RSVP to the meeting and gain the details for teleconferencing, please email email@example.com.
