There are a variety of tools and resources available to assist schools to become more supportive of sexual diversity and to promote student wellbeing for everyone.
National Safe Schools Framework
The National Safe Schools Framework from MCEECDYA provides the overarching document for all schools with a vision and a set of guiding principles for safe and supportive school communities that also promote student wellbeing and develop respective relationships. A range of supporting resources can be found at the Safe Schools Hub. The Hub provides school communities, teachers, school leaders, students, parents and specialist professionals with a range of safe school strategies.
Safe Schools Coalition Australia
Safe Schools Coalition Australia is a national coalition of organisations and schools working together to create safe and inclusive school environments for same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse students, staff and families. It is funded by the Australian Government and convened nationally by the Foundation for Young Australians (FYA).
Safe Schools Coalition Australia offers a suite of free resources and support to equip staff and students with skills, practical ideas and greater confidence to lead positive change and be safe and inclusive for same sex attracted, intersex and gender diverse students, staff and families. The program works together with individual schools to tailor support that meets the needs of their community.
Wear It Purple
Wear It Purple is a student lead initiative that supports sexuality and gender diverse (i.e. “rainbow”) young people to be proud of who they are. The organisation believes that every young person is unique, important and worthy of love and that no one should be subject to bullying, belittlement or invalidation. The organisation co-ordinates an annual Wear It Purple Day. Schools and workplaces are able to register their support of the day and organise an event to show their support of rainbow youth.
GLSEN (Gay, Lesbian & Straight Education Network) - USA
GLSEN is the leading American education organization focused on ensuring safe schools for all students. Their goal is for every student, in every school, to be valued and treated with respect, regardless of their sexual orientation, gender identity or gender expression. The organisation believes that all students deserve a safe and affirming school environment where they can learn and grow.
GLSEN has a range of resources that can be helpful in creating safe and inclusive learning environments, including their Safe Space Kit. Other campaigns GLSEN are involved in include ThinkB4YouSpeak and Day of Silence. The organisation also provides a range of resources for educators K – 12 that are available from their website.
An American resource for primary schools, It’s Elementary models excellent teaching about family diversity, name-calling, stereotypes, community building and more. The accompanying 136-page It’s Elementary guide to community organizing, professional development, and K-8 curriculum is shares ideas and resources for using It’s Elementary to make change on many levels in the classroom, in schools of education, with school boards and within communities. A copy of the film is available in Federation’s library for loan.
