Invest in TAFE

On Wednesday 28 September the NSW Minister for Education, Adrian Piccoli, announced a consultation on the future of the NSW vocational education and training (VET) sector. It is called Smart and Skilled: making NSW number one. The consultation process will take place during October 2011.
It is important that you have your say on the issues raised in the discussion paper. These include:
• competition and contestable funding
• a market driven demand focused training system
• a so-called “student entitlement” to training
• the role of TAFE in the context of an “entitlement” to VET training
• assuring the quality of VET delivery in a market driven environment
Everyone in our community already has an entitlement to attend TAFE and receive government funded high quality training at a modest cost.
The concept of “student entitlement” means governments can shift costs to students through underwriting income contingent loans rather than increasing actual funding. Students are forced into debt to enrol in VET, and will pay more tax when employed. At the same time, profits for private providers grow.
