We are asking members to shift to direct debit or direct credit card payments for their union subscriptions, away from payroll deductions or cash/invoice payments.
Direct payments keep the union strong and therefore provide the best protection to individual teachers in the face of government attacks on workers.
Federation knows from teacher unions in other states that conservative governments have legislated to abolish payroll deductions by employing authorities, leaving teacher unions weakened and their members vulnerable. Even though school teachers in NSW are currently covered by state industrial awards we cannot rely on a state government not to hand over their industrial relations powers to the federal government, especially if a federal government attempts to withhold federal funding. We have already seen this in the TAFE and higher education sector.
