Early career teachers offered timely advice

Practical strategies to help with student engagement were discussed at today’s Centre for Professional Learning course: Classroom Management through Effective Teaching.

“Programming is the key to engaging students,” Jane Sherlock, retired Head Teacher and a course presenter said.

“The syllabus is the foundation but you add the engagement and inspiration through your program and your lessons.”

She said teachers should consider what will drive student interest and curiosity.

“The sooner you get to know your students the more successful you will be.”

She suggested writing a letter or email to your students, sharing some information about yourself (for example favourite music, interests, what is important to you and your strengths) and ask them to write back.

Separate primary and secondary groups addressed specific sector issues relating to classroom management and effective teaching.

Participants were also provided with reading material for later reference.
