Federation officers will join concerned citizens for a rally opposing plans by the Turnbull government to sign a Trans-Pacific Partnership (TPP) free trade agreement, on Monday 28 August.
Earlier this year, the United States withdrew from TPP negotiations. Now, the 11 other countries involved in the talks, including Australia, are attempting to reach a deal without the US.
Australian Fair Trade and Investment Network (AFTINET) campaign director Dr Patricia Ranald says the Australian government is pushing for minimal changes to the text of the draft agreement, which would lock in all the worst provisions that were initiated by the United States.
AFTINET says the TPP would be bad for:
- workers
- the environment
- democracy
- health
- internet users.
Now locked out of access to the US market, other governments are resisting the provisions that were initiated by the United States.

Australian Fair Trade and Investment Network will hold the protest outside the Intercontinental Hotel, corner of Bridge and Phillip streets, Sydney at 1pm. ACTU President Ged Kearney will be among the speakers.
